On the Mutual Action Among Certain Growth - Regulating Substances in Apple - Seed Germination

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to see mutual activities exhibited by among some promoting hormonal substances and inhibiting substances (seed-exogenous inhibitor and ABA) to dormant apple-seed germination of cultivar Jonathan.
Seeds after removing seedcoats were soaked in a testing growth-regulator solution for 5 hours and then were placed on 1% agar plate to allow germination at room temperature. 1. The results showed that ABA strongly reduced GA promoting action on apple-seed germination, while another promoting agent BA and inhibitor ABA are mutually antagonistic. Mode of the ABA action suggested a close resemblance to the natural appleseed inhibitor.
2. IAA indicated no response to the effects of either GA, BA or ABA on dormant apple-seed germination, yet it reduced the TIBA inhibition considerably.
3. At physiological levels B-9 and TIBA inhibited apple-seed germination. Although B-9 failed to reduce the promoting action of GA, it reduced the action of another promoting agent BA having antagonistic effect on the ABA action and thus seemed to inhibit the germination.
4. TIBA had antagonism to either GA or BA influence on the germination, but not to IAA.
